Living from the Spirit-Led Self — Recognizing Reactivity vs. Agency

Living from the Spirit-Led Self — Recognizing Reactivity vs. Agency

In our last blog, we shared what we believe is the core work of therapy: helping people move from an unaware, emotionally reactive state to a place of Spirit-led agency. But how can we tell when we’re living reactively versus when we’re living from our Spirit-led Self?

By drawing from attachment theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and the truth of Scripture, we can begin to recognize the difference. And when our Spirit-led Self is guiding us, the qualities we show look remarkably like both the “C’s” of IFS and the Fruit of the Spirit.

Signs We’re Living Reactively

Reactivity shows up when protective parts or unhealed wounds are driving the ship. This often looks like:

  • Impulsivity — snapping in anger, withdrawing in shame, or panicking in anxiety.

  • Disconnection — feeling cut off from God, others, or even ourselves.

  • Lack of awareness — reacting without pausing to notice what’s happening inside.

  • Survival mode — living primarily out of fear, self-protection, or control.

From an attachment perspective, this is what happens when our nervous system is dysregulated. From an IFS perspective, this is when our protector parts are running the show.

The Spirit-Led Self

IFS teaches that at the core of every person is the Self—the part of us that is calm, wise, and compassionate. Christians understand this more deeply: our truest Self is meant to be led by the Holy Spirit.

When the Spirit-led Self is guiding, we are able to:

  • Pause and notice emotions without being swept away.

  • Acknowledge protective parts with compassion.

  • Respond in alignment with Christ’s love.

This is what Paul describes in Galatians 5: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

The “C’s” of IFS and the Fruit of the Spirit

Both psychology and Scripture point to similar qualities of a healthy, Spirit-led life.

The 8 “C’s” of Self (IFS):

  • Calm

  • Clarity

  • Curiosity

  • Compassion

  • Confidence

  • Courage

  • Creativity

  • Connectedness

The Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23):

  • Love

  • Joy

  • Peace

  • Patience

  • Kindness

  • Goodness

  • Faithfulness

  • Gentleness

  • Self-control

The Overlap
When we are living from our Spirit-led Self, we begin to see these qualities naturally emerge. Calm overlaps with peace, compassion with kindness, confidence with faithfulness, gentleness with connectedness, and self-control with clarity.

Psychology and theology meet here: we are healthiest when our emotions and actions flow from a Spirit-guided center.

Practices to Shift from Reactivity to Spirit-Led Agency

How do we begin to live more from our Spirit-led Self? Therapy and spiritual formation offer practices that help us build awareness and regulation:

  1. Pause and Notice – Create space in your day to check in with your body and emotions.

  2. Name Parts and Feelings – Gently acknowledge: “A part of me feels anxious,” instead of “I am anxious.”

  3. Borrow Calm – In therapy, relationships, and prayer, learn to co-regulate until you can self-regulate.

  4. Scripture Meditation – Let God’s Word calm your nervous system and anchor your spirit. In our podcast episode with Becky Castle Miller, she mentions the importance of reading the Gospels over and over the noticing the emotions of Jesus.

  5. Pray – Ask God to lead you in this work.

Why This Matters

When we live reactively, our parts and our pain often rule our lives. But when we live from our Spirit-led Self, we are more able to slow down and embody love, peace, and wisdom—not just for ourselves, but for our families, our workplaces, and our churches.

This is what therapy at Steadfast Christian Counseling is all about: helping people learn to notice, regulate, and invite the Spirit-led Self to guide the way.
