The Core Work of Therapy — Moving from Reactivity to Agency

The Core Work of Therapy — Moving from Reactivity to Agency

At Steadfast Christian Counseling, we believe the heart of therapy isn’t just about coping skills or problem solving. At its core, therapy helps us move from an unaware, emotionally reactive state to a place of agency and Spirit-led awareness over how we are showing up in the world.

When we’re unaware, emotions often drive our actions without our consent. But when we grow in awareness—through attachment, emotional regulation, and inviting the Holy Spirit to lead—we learn to respond with wisdom rather than react from pain.

Why Reactivity Keeps Us Stuck

Without awareness, we often live in survival mode:

  • We snap in anger when we feel threatened.

  • We shut down when shame surfaces.

  • We scramble for control when anxiety rises.

This reactive state is not a moral failure—it’s our nervous system trying to protect us. Attachment theory reminds us that these reactions are wired into us early in life. If we didn’t experience secure, consistent care, our bodies may still be primed to react instead of rest.

Therapy as a Space for Self-Regulation

In therapy, clients experience something many never had consistently: a safe, attuned relationship where emotions can be seen, named, and soothed.

  • Attachment theory calls this co-regulation—borrowing calm from another person until we learn to calm ourselves.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) shows us that we all have “parts” that try to protect us. In therapy, we learn to understand these parts with compassion rather than shame.

The goal is not to erase our emotions or silence our parts, but to help them trust that a wiser, Spirit-led Self can guide the ship.

The Spirit-Led Self as the Driver

The IFS Perspective
IFS describes the core Self with qualities like compassion, calmness, curiosity, and clarity.

The Christian Perspective
As Christians, we believe our deepest Self is led by the Holy Spirit—our Wise Self. When this Self is in the driver’s seat, we:

  • Notice emotions without being overwhelmed by them.

  • Recognize protective “parts” and thank them for their service.

  • Choose responses that reflect both our values and the fruit of the Spirit.

This is therapy’s greatest gift: not to make life painless, but to give us the freedom to respond with awareness and love rather than being swept away by reactivity.

From Reactivity to Agency

Agency means we have the ability to pause, notice, and choose.

  • Instead of yelling in anger, we can say, “I feel unprotected,” and set a boundary.

  • Instead of collapsing in shame, we can say, “A part of me fears rejection,” and rest in God’s secure love.

Therapy helps us practice this shift again and again until it becomes part of who we are. Over time, clients begin to say:

  • “I don’t just react anymore.”

  • “I actually feel like I have choices.”

  • “I can show up in my relationships differently.”

Why This Matters for the Church and the World

When we live reactively, our relationships suffer. Families fracture, marriages erode, workplaces become tense, and churches fail to be safe places for healing.

But when individuals begin living with agency—guided by the Spirit—they become people of peace, compassion, and wisdom.

This is why we believe therapy is not just mental health work; it is discipleship work. It helps us grow into the image of Christ, who shows us what it means to feel fully and act faithfully.
